Michael Putney, a news reporter all reporters should learn from

I have been a reporter in Miami for 5 years. I have learned a lot, but I have so much to learn and Michael Putney is one of those reporters we all learn from. We all need to watch him and really pay attention to his questions and way of reporting.



Twenty years ago the Miami Herald named Putney "the unofficial dean of South Florida’s TV journalists." Michael Putney was born in New York City and spent his childhood in St. Louis and Berkeley, California.

After high school, he attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, worked as a radio reporter and then radio news director and editor at the Columbia newspaper.

In 1970, Putney moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for The National Observer as a reporter and national feature writer. After the Observer, he worked briefly for Time magazine. Later that year the Miami Herald hired him to write for Tropic. And ever since 1981 Putney returned to broadcasting as a reporter and later an anchor for WTVJ.

In 1989, Putney joined WPLG Channel 10 as the station’s senior political reporter and host of the Sunday morning newsmakers/interview show, “This Week in South Florida.”

Local and national politicians visiting South Florida are regularly invited to appear on Putney’s show. A weekly paper once wrote, “It’s no use declining his invitation — Putney will tell that to his viewers, who will then wonder whether the person has something to hide.”

After almost 45 years as a journalist, all reporters should watch his stories and learn from him.

An interesting blog called Miami Beach 411 http://www.miamibeach411.com/ recently asked Putney about his most memorable stories and favorite haunts and enjoyed reading it so much that I would like to share their interview with my followers. Here it goes:

Can you tell us some of the more memorable stories you’ve covered?
Most memorable stories include the Mariel boatlift, the Liberty City riots, Elian Gonzalez, Joe Carollo stabbing Maurice Ferre in the back, moderating the debate between gubernatorial hopefuls Bill McBride (who whiffed) and Jeb Bush (who didn’t) and the 2000 election debacle.

Who are some people, in your opinion, have had the greatest impact on South Florida?
Biggest players in South Florida over the last 30 years include Fidel Castro, Jorge Mas Canosa, Bob Graham (and his wife, Adele), Jeb Bush, banker Harry Hood Bassett, Miami Herald publisher Alvah Chapman, Donna Shalala, Wayne Huizenga, Judge Gerry Wetherington, Merrett Stierheim, Jean-Bertrand Aristide. There are many more, but those names come to mind.

Is there anyone in South Florida who you’ve wanted to do a story on or interview but never had the chance?
I’d sure like to sit down with Steve Ross, new owner of the Dolphins and what’s the name of that stadium he owns?

Name some of your favorite neighborhood haunts.
Neighborhood haunts include George’s in NOBE (north Miami Beach vs. North Miami Beach), Barrio Latino in Aventura, Michy’s on Biscayne Blvd., and a delightful newcomer, Petit Rouge on Biscayne at about 124th Street.

A close friend or relative is visiting Miami for the first time. You’re going to take them on a leisurely Sunday drive. Where do you take them and what stops do you make along the way?
If the visitor was under 30, we’d cruise down Ocean Drive; over 30 we’d walk down Lincoln Road. If eco-minded, the lighthouse at Cape Florida on Key Biscayne.

An old friend who you haven’t seen in years is overnighting in Miami and you’re taking him/her to dinner. Where do you go?
If they didn’t know Cuban food, probably to Versailles, which is very consistent. Also cheap. The Peruvian fare at Adriana’s in Surfside is delicious. I also like Surfside’s Cafe Ragazzi. For a big plunge, Capital Grill or the restaurant at the Delano. For no-glitz intimacy, good food and lower prices, Petit Rouge.

What is your favorite in-town weekend getaway?
An ideal weekend might include tennis in the morning at North Shore Park (excellent public courts), a stroll on the beach (I particularly like Bal Harbour), an evening concert by the New World Symphony at the Lincoln Theater, followed by dinner at one of the many good (but not great) al fresco restaurants on Lincoln Road where people watching is the best in the world.

What are your favorite local websites?
I like this Random Pixels guy quite a bit and rely on Bob Norman’s Daily Pulp for juicy political stuff.

Favorite guilty pleasure.Oreos out of the machine at work. Pretty lame, huh?

And finally, what newspapers do you read up there in Aventura?I read The Miami Herald (hanging in there despite steep cuts), the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and glance through the Sun-Sentinel. Used to read the Daily Business Review but it got too expensive. And I can see Cuba from my house.

After having read the interview that MiamiBeach411 http://www.miamibeach411.com/ did to Putney, I want to eat and visit some of the places he recommends and more importantly, I want to look up some of the people he mentions and I don't know. Definitely, there is something you just can't buy, learn at school, or acquire with youth and make-up and that is called experience. Something that Michael has and it shows.

La pulga que cabalgó al tigre libro del periodista español Vicente Botín

Leer es vital para los reporteros y yo intento leer aunque el tiempo no alcance en tiempos de mucho trafico, facebook, twitter, internet y mil distracciones. Por ello me lei hace poco un libro que enseno mucha informacion elemental sobre la historia de mi pais, Cuba. Todo reportero por obligacion debe leer historia, aprender sobre ciencias politicas, relaciones internacionales y otros paises, pero en Miami todo reportero debe empaparse en la historia de Cuba.
Al corresponsal Vicente Botin lo habia visto con sus camisas rosadas reportando desde La Habana con el Morro de trasfondo para television espanola. Su sintaxis implacable y vocabulario perfecto habian hecho que lo admirarse como reportero. Ahora que me lei su libro me gusta aun mas. Aqui les incluire algunos de los datos que aprendi sobre Cuba leyéndolo.

Botín habla de lo que llama "El holocausto silencioso" (158) y añade que "Extraoficialmente, durante el año 2008 murieron 42 reclusos, 23 de ellos por falta de cuidados médicos y 11 por suicidio. En los 5 primeros meses de 2009 la cifra de fallecidos era de 18, 10 de ellos por suicidio" Hecho que Botín cita a Elizardo Sánchez llamándolo el "holocausto silencioso". Polémica entre alcalde y jefe de policía de Miami

Las cosas que se ven en Miami! Por ello es tan interesante ser reportera en esta ciudad. Hoy estoy reportando en referencia a las nuevas acusaciones hechas en contra del alcalde Tomas Regalado por supuestamente intentar en vano demorar la recogida de maquinas de juego ilegales. Primero fue el propio jefe de la policia Miguel Exposito, quien en dos cartas dijo que el alcalde habia intervenido pero no especifico en como exactamente, ni dio detalles exactos. Hoy El Nuevo Herald publica que el mayor de la policia de Miami, Alfredo Alvarez, tambien ha declarado que dos veces pidio el alcalde en vano que pospusieran la recogida de maquinas. Entrevistando hoy al alcalde tuve que preguntarle, sin pena, como deben hacer los reporteros si es esto cierto. El afirmo que le preocupaba que ello distrallese la atencion de las elecciones pero nunca intervino para que no quitaran las maquinas. Confirme que en efecto el propio alcalde habia recomendado al jefe de la policia para su cargo actual y ahora ambos estaban involucrados en tremendo estira y encoge. Cuando le pregunte si era cierto lo que el jefe habia dicho sobre el, en referencia a los 9000 dolares donados por los duenos de las maquinas a su campana para alcalde en el 2009, su respuesta fue que ello era cierto y el, Tomas Regalado, no lo ocultaba porque son records publicos como mismo la policia de Miami, su sindicato y todo, lo apoyo en su campana. Entonces Tomas no termina la frase y al que bien escuche no se le escape lo que los entrevistados dicen y tampoco lo que no dicen. Muchas veces sutil e interesante. En su momento la policia lo apoyo pero ahora que el rebajo sueldos y recorto beneficios a bomberos y policias, con tal de no aumentar los impuestos de los residentes de Miami, el alcalde no necesariamente tiene muchos devotos en las uniones de bomberos y policias.
Por otra parte estan los tiros de policias a civiles y el descontento de algunos como el comisionado Richard Dunn, a quien tambien entreviste hoy, que promete en la reunion de los comisioonados el 13 de enero le pedira a Exposito que renuncio y recalco otro tema que en medio de tanta polemica me resulto interesante, enfatizo en que estan buscando un policia hispano que sustituya al actual jefe. Varias veces repitio la palabra hispano y anadio que muchos intentaban mirarlo como un conflicto racial, pero no lo era. Dice que en los reportes habia casos en que la policia le habia disparado a personas en la espalda cuando estas huian.
En fin, el ano comenzo ardiendo en la ciudad de Miami, con problemas entre el alcalde y el jefe de la policia nada mas y nada menos.

Una periodista que me llamó la atención

Helen Thomas renunció en el 2010 a su posición como reportera de la Casa Blanca. Helen me pareció una figura fascinante porque cubrió noticias desde que Eisenhower era presidente hasta Obama, las impresiones que esa mujer tiene que tener de esos personajes que hicieron historia y su conocimiento de ellos por haberlos visto en momentos de guerra, crisis, nervios y celebraciones no tienen precio. Cuándo va a escribir un libro? Esa periodista tiene que haber visto mucho, incluyendo cosas que nunca reportó. Me parece increíble que haya renunciado después de Obama la criticase por haber dicho que los judíos debían "get the hell out of Palestine" y regresar a Polonia y Alemania.

Las noticias más importantes del año 2010

Estas noticias cambiaron el mundo y creo nos conmovieron a muchos, sin importar de que lado de la pantalla estábamos, ni si escribíamos o no para un periódico. Todos quisimos saber qué ocurría en Haití y muchos ayudaron.



Enero 12 Haití es sacudido por un terremoto con una magnitud de 7.0. Se estima que 230 mil personas murieron, más de 300,000 personas resultaron heridas y un millón de personas quedaron desamparadas, sin casas, ni posesiones.



Enero 27 la compañía Apple lanza el iPad y en abril del mismo año vendió más de 3 millones de unidades en 80 días. (Por navidad mi papá me regaló uno y me fascina).

Febrero 18 Un hombre de 53 años de edad, Joseph Stack, estrelló un avión contra un edificio del IRS, en Austin, Texas, matando a un gerente de servicio, e hiriendo a 13personas.

Febrero 24 Una empleada del parque Sea World en la Florida murió ahogada por la ballena que entrenaba desde hacia años, el animal no fue liberado, ni muerto.



Febrero 27 Un terremoto de una magnitud de 8.8 sacudió la región de Maule en Chile, los vistigios se sientieron por casi un mes tras el terremoto inicial.

Marzo 20 Un equipo de doctores españoles completaron el primer transplante de cara total.

Marzo 23 El presidente Obama firmó haciendo ley cobertura médica para casi todos los americanos. Gran parte de la legislacion no entrará en efecto hasta el 2014.



Abril 20 Un barco llamado The Deepwater Horizon explotó matando a 11 trabajadores y regando petróleo en el oceáno por 3 meses que llegó a las orillas de Louisiana, Missisippi, Alabama y Florida. El derrame no se detuvo hasta el 15 de julio.

Mayo 1 Faisal Shahzad fue arrestado y sentenciado el 5 de octubre a vivir en prisión por intentar bombardear Times Square.

Junio 11 - Julio 11 Sur Africa celebró por primera vez en suelo africano la copa mundial y España ganó la final 1-0, el primer título que gana esa nación y como buena descendiente de mis bisabuelos y abuela española celebré por todo lo alto.

Wikileaks reveló miles de documentos secretos desde el 2004 al 2008, sobre todo lo que Estados Unidos sabia sobre a que grado estaban involucrados el Talibán, Irán y Pakistán. El fundador de Wikileads, Julian Assange, no quiere revelar las fuentes de muchos documentos comprometedores que a lo largo del año 2010, ha revelado.

Octubre 13 Comienza el rescate de los 33 mineros chilenos después que permanecieron 70 días bajo tierra y Chile tras el terremoto que afectó el país le dio una lección al mundo de unión y esperanza.

Diciembre 7 El fundador de Wikileads Julian Assange es arrestado por un asalto sexual en Suecia y puesto en libertad el 17 de diciembre.

En mi vida personal los dos eventos más importantes del 2010 fueron: Primero el nacimiento de mi sobrina Elena y segundo, mi trabajo en Univisión. Al igual que yo sé que todos tenemos noticias importantes que no salieron en los periódicos, ni se vieron por el televisor, pero para nosotros hicieron titulares en nuestras vidas. Esas son las dos noticias más importantes en mi vida para el 2010. Qué el 2011 les traiga alegrías y bendiciones a todos los televidentes que me dan su apoyo y buenos consejos de verme en las noticias y a los lectores de mi blog!!!

A message that bosses should give their employees, even if they don't work on tv

One of the best bosses I've had in my years working on telivision sent the employees this message for Christmas and I loved it so much I had to share it with the readers of my blog. Enjoy and apply to your work; regardless of the field you work at, people think of television as a glamorous job but just like in any other field you have positive and negative employees. At the end of the day is just about people doing their jobs, or not doing them as well as they could. Enjoy this read and pass it on if you like it. The title is:

Fresh Blood

"When presidents are elected, they appoint their own Cabinet. When a new boss takes over they often bring in “their own people”. Whether or not you are in an economy like this, where unemployment is at a 12% high, words like fresh blood can often sound intimidating. No doubt the connotation is often negative. The phrase often accompanied by the excuse of why you were passed over for a position you thought you deserved or quite frankly, when you are going to lose your job. But what if the term wasn’t negative; what if you could make it work for you rather than against you? You can

Our bodies regenerate cells in order to sustain life. To fail to do so would mean the body would die. It’s pretty basic anatomy we all studied in grade school. To decide not to apply that to your own life in the set of skills you posses, the tasks you are charged with or frame of mind with which you look at your job means you cheat the life span of your career.

Adhering to the motto that learning is a lifelong process is a good way to start. In Stephen Covey’s book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” Habit number 7 is Sharpen the Saw: The balancing and renewal of your resources, energy, and health to create a sustainable long-term effective lifestyle.” Covey states that mental development most often comes through formal education and that when leave the external discipline of school, many of us let our minds atrophy.

Highly effective people often challenge the status quo. That’s where real innovation takes place. We can’t afford not to innovate. We live in times and work in an industry that just when you think you” got it!” something new comes along.

To not recognize the real advantage of new blood for a new boss, whose focus is to create change in the least time possible would be like we Cubans say “tapar el sol con un dedo.” I mean you don’t have to hear the words: "That will never work.";“We can’t do that”,"It's been done before." They don’t know the routines and they also don’t require the time and energy to be convinced we’re not going to do it like that anymore. They also come exposed to new schools of thoughts, because let’s be honest they may not have been working as many hours and as hard as we do here to get the Harris working!!!!!! And still put news on the air at the rate we do. But this isn’t an excuse.

No doubt someone with fresh blood comes often with fresh eyes. They manage to find quick solutions to hurdles we’ve learned to live with. In an attempt to reinvent yourself and make sure your not falling in routines and overlooking opportunities it’s helpful to ask yourself when faced with a challenge: “What would someone new do in my job?” Let’s recognize the fact that if someone were named to your position they might find a way to operation more efficient, or a better way to serve the viewers/customers, or enhance the product. But right now you can do it, a lot faster and better than anyone else. Make yourself the best candidate for your own job!

The advantage you as a current employee possess is that you know the company, you know who and what it takes to make things happen, the structure and the social networks. These take time to learn. Time is money. You get to bypass that if you weave into the thread of your professional existence some way to rejuvenate your own professional blood.

I often use the term emotional intelligence (EI) because I believe that it often times more the key to success that IQ . One of the factors of EI is Social awareness – the ability to sense, understand, and react to others' emotions while comprehending social networks. Using this same type of awareness also comes in really handy for innovating in the field of communication and analyzing what works and what doesn’t: Aren’t you a user? Aren’t you a viewer? Aren’t many of you the demo we are looking for? Would you want to watch your own show? Log on to our website? Would you stay awake to see what you are offering. Let’s forget about ego here and stick to practicality. Is your story really that different that IT’S WORTH MY TIME? In the world of bombardment of communication with millions of web pages, Ipads, smartphones and simple responsibilities – I mean we still all have families and hopefully hobbies too, WOULD YOU TAKE PRECIOUS TIME OUT OF YOUR DAY TO WATCH/READ US? Today whatever we compete for people’s attention is our competition. That no longer means other TV stations. We compete for eyeballs. I don’t need to tell you how much there is out there to compete with.

Your ability to look beyond the world you live in and analyze what’s going on in the world around you will help to sustain your career. Expose yourself to new ideas of thoughts and challenging the status quo will bring fresh blood. You be the fresh blood; don’t let someone else be."

La revista Cárteles pidió entrevistarme, aquí están sus preguntas y mis respuestas.

1-Háblame sobre tu formación y trayectoria sintéticamente.

Me integré como reportera al equipo de Noticias 23 en junio del año 2010. Incursioné en la televisión en el año 2000 como interna para los shows noticiosos de América en Vivo y Hoy en el mundo de la cadena Telemundo. Empecé de reportera en el Canal 41, donde cubrí historias de toda índole y realicé reportajes investigativos para el show del reconocido periodista Guillermo Descalzi. En el 2007 tomé un nuevo reto, fungí como presentadora, reportera y productora de CV Network, canal que salía al aire en New York, Miami y Puerto Rico. Entonces tuve la oportunidad de cubrir la interesante campaña presidencial de ese año, que incluyó las visitas al Sur de la Florida de Barrack Obama, John McCain, Sarah Palin y Hillary Clinton. En mi último año trabajando en noticias Genteve tuve la oportunidad de presentar un segmento legal, que resolvía problemas de fraude, robo de identidad, estafa de contratistas, entre otros temas de interés para la comunidad del Sur de la Florida.

Saqué una doble licenciatura en Periodismo y Literatura española de la Universidad Internacional de la Florida. En el año 2010 terminé mi maestría en Literatura de la misma universidad. Me fascina vivir en Miami dado que es una ciudad multicultural y ser reportera en un lugar así, considerado por muchos como la capital de Latinoamérica, es un reto y una aventura. Además del periodismo mis otras tres pasiones son viajar, leer y escribir.

2-¿Tienes alguna ascendencia familiar-profesional en el medio, o es tu iniciativa propia y por qué?

Mi padre es ingeniero químico y mi madre estudió economía, nadie de mi familia trabaja en la prensa escrita, ni televisiva. Fue me iniciativa propia porque tengo lo que considero que todo periodista debe poseer: soy curiosa, me interesa la gente, lo que les preocupa e importa, la política, lo que ocurre en el mundo y como se vive en otros países. La curiosidad es primordial y no hay carrera que sacie esa característica mía como el periodismo. Nunca sé que noticia voy a cubrir ese día y absolutamente todos los días aprendo algo nuevo. Lo más maravilloso de mi trabajo es cuando puedo ayudar a la gente, comunicando que una familia necesita ayuda para pagar por el velorio de un niño de 13 años que falleció por accidente cuando un amigo le disparó, o una madre que no tiene dinero para entender a un hijo que está en el hospital, o simplemente cuando la policía busca a alguien y yo intento dar todos los ángulos de la historia y hacerla lo mejor que puedo.

3- ¿Desde cuándo y cómo llegas a engrosar las filas de Noticias 23?

En junio del año 2010. Trabajar en Noticias 23 es verdaderamente un sueño hecho realidad. Desde que llegué aquí a Estados Unidos a los 12 años estoy viendo a Alina y Guillermo presentando las noticias, muchas veces los escucho decir mi nombre y me parece mentira. No me lo puedo creer. Me fascina escucharlos decir mi nombre. = ) Siento entonces que el que persevera triunfa y que querer es poder.

4- Mencióname reportajes con los que te has sentido más realizada profesionalmente y por qué?

En octubre de este año tuve la oportunidad de viajar a Venezuela, donde grabé tres reportajes para mi serie especial Hoy en Venezuela. En la primera parte abordé el tema de la inseguridad en ese país, en el que mueren 48 y 50 personas en un fin de semana como se puede ver en la morgue de Bello Monte, donde fui con mis cámaras. Sobre los homicidios en los barrios y los robos en los vecindarios más seguros y lo difícil que se les hace combatir la inseguridad porque el gobierno chavista no les da su apoyo dado a que ambos políticos son de la oposición me hablan el alcalde de Caracas, Antonio Ledezma y Henrique Capriles Radonski, gobernador de todo el estado de Miranda dentro del que se encuentra Caracas. En mi segundo reportaje entramos en un operativo policial a Petare, la segunda favela más grande de toda Latinoamérica, con más de 2 mil barrios adentro y asesinatos todo el tiempo. En mi tercer reportaje entrevisté a una víctima de secuestro express. Estos reportajes me dieron mucha satisfacción porque los venezolanos que viven álla dijeron estar feliz que el mundo supiese la verdad de cómo se veían obligados a vivir y los venezolanos en Miami se me acercaron para decirme que les gustaba que hubiese vertido luz sobre la situación de su país.

5- Alguna meta por realizar en un futuro mediato o inmediato?

Quiero comprar mi propia cámara y cuando viaje grabar historias que pueda publicar en mi propio website, esa es mi meta a largo plazo, por el momento pongo todas mis energías en mi trabajo, en darle a los televidentes lo mejor de mí. Me esfuerzo al máximo.

6- ¿Qué te atreves a hablarme sobre tu vida privada?

Tengo una hermana a quien quiero y admiro mucho y una relación muy bonita con mis padres. Mi papá lee mi blog, graba mis reportajes y se los enseña orgulloso a todos sus amigos. Mi madre no se queda atrás. Ella me crítica constantemente, por supuesto que lo hace por mi bien, me dice hoy dijiste esto, hubiese sido mejor que dijeras tal cosa. Me encanta. Se lo agradezco, todos los días se aprende y se mejora. Mis padres están muy orgullosos de mí y sin su apoyo no hubiese estudiado, ni llegado a trabajar en lo que tanto me apasiona: el periodismo. Me preguntas sobre mi vida privada, bien, no tengo novio, imagino que sea eso a lo que refieras. Qué más puedo decirte?
